Faculty Introduction
Lead facilitators for HCP 0001 are Vanessa Casebolt, MSN, RN and Ysabel Gomez, CMA.Ms. Casebolt has facilitated the Health Career Core class for several years, in addition to being a Basic Life Support instructor and Nursing Skills Lab Coordinator at BC Central Campus. She has medical/ surgical and public health nursing experience.
Ms. Gomez graduated from BC's medical assistant program and earned her AA degree. She also has facilitated the Core class for several years, as well as teaching Basic Life Support and medical assistant courses. She has experience working in physicians' offices.
Course Description
The Health Career Core course presents basic knowledge and skills for students majoring in a health science degree program. The course introduces students to a health care delivery system, the health occupations, and teaches medical and employability skills.Methods of Instruction
This is a 75 contact hour course. In this class, we will meet once a week for six (6) hours (seminar and lab session) for a total of eight (8) weeks. You will engage in self-directed out-of-class activities for the remainder of the class time.In-class activities during the seminar session include class discussions, question and answer sessions, review of information, and seven (7) written examinations. Activities during lab include viewing of videos, demonstrations, and instructor-supervised practice and assessment of skills, in smaller student groups.
Projects to be completed outside of class that will assist the student in meeting learning outcomes include: a math project (completion of math problems that review fractions, decimals, military time, ratios etc.), computer project (personal resume and cover letter) and video viewing form (viewed in class and/or at campus learning resource center). These assignments are not graded, but are required. The student will also be responsible for reading and studying the textbook material to be covered in the following week's exam.
Learning Outcomes

- Discuss legal and ethical responsibilities related to health care
- Recognize and practice safety and security procedures
- Demonstrate an understanding of and apply wellness and disease concepts
- Recognize and practice infection control procedures
- Recognize and respond to emergency situations
- Accurately determine baseline vital signs
- Demonstrate proper body mechanics and perform patient positioning and transfers
- Apply basic math, science and computer skills

- Required Meeting Dates or Times: Attendance is required for all seminar and lab sessions during the 8 week course, including the orientation seminar held on the first day of class. Unexcused absences may result in withdrawal from/ failure of the course.
